Looking for the perfect quilt pattern for your project can seem overwhelming, but there are plenty of quilt designs out there that are easy to follow. A great place to start is at your local quilting fabric store; they often have quilting kits available with materials and instructions all in one package. The instructions will lead you through the quilt-making process step-by-step, making it easier for inexperienced quilters. With a little effort, even novices can complete a quilt pattern with ease!

Gather all the essential materials

Making a quilt is a fun and rewarding project, but it can also be a little daunting for beginners. If you're new to quilting, don't worry - we're here to help! In this blog post, we will walk you through the entire process of making a winter quilt, from start to finish. We'll show you where to find the best fabric store, what types of quilting fabric to choose, and how to put your quilt together. So, grab your fabric scissors and let's get started!

Quilting using your favorite quilting fabric

Nothing beats snuggling up in a warm quilt on a cold winter’s night. So, let’s show you how to make your very own winter quilt from start to finish using your chosen quilting fabric! Walking you through the steps of finding quilting fabric at a fabric store, cutting fabric, piecing quilting fabric together, and adding the finishing touches, whether you're a beginner quilter or an experienced sewer, this tutorial is for you!

Quilt making for beginners

The first step in making your winter quilt is to find the perfect quilting fabric. When you're shopping for quilting fabric, it's important to choose one that is durable and will hold up well to repeated washings. Quilt panels are a great option for beginners, as they are easy to work with and require minimal sewing. Look for quilt panels that feature winter scenes or patterns - these will add a festive touch to your quilt.

Once you've selected your quilting fabric, it's time to head to the cutting table. For best results, use a rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat when cutting your fabric. This will help ensure that your cuts are clean and precise. Once you've cut your quilting fabric into pieces, it's time to start piecing everything together.

How to assemble your quilt

To assemble your quilt, you will need to use a sewing machine. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can hand-sew your quilt, but this will take significantly longer. Start by laying out your quilting fabric pieces in the order you want them to appear in the finished product. Then, using a straight stitch, sew the quilting fabric pieces together. Fabric store: The best quilting tools for beginners

If you’re just starting out on your quilting adventure, and you’ve chosen some quilt patterns to focus on, chances are you’re now wondering which quilting tools you need and which ones you can leave on the shelf. When you choose the right quilting tools for the job, you can rest assured knowing you haven’t spent unnecessarily, and you won’t have a pile of fancy tools that you’ll never use.

Don’t feel like you have to get everything on the list we’ve put together below, but if you are going to drop into your fabric store for some quilting fabric, you really are going to want to get your hands on at least some of the essential quilting supplies. It will make your quilting experience a whole lot easier and far more enjoyable.

Are rotary cutters and scissors essential quilting tools?

One of the first quilting tools you will need to purchase is a rotary cutter. Available in a wide variety of styles, there are lots of variations to choose from. Your local quilt shop may have a few you can test drive to see which one feels best in your hand. But be warned, rotary cutting is not as simple as just picking up a quilting tool. It may take time to get used to this new skill, but once you master it, you will be able to quick-piece your quilts, or at least cut the patchwork shapes you need very quickly and accurately.

Most people have a pair of scissors in the house but when it comes to cutting fabric, it is always ideal to have a pair of scissors dedicated to cutting fabric and nothing else. This means hiding your scissors from everyone else in the house to ensure they stay sharp and ready to always cut through fabric.

Do I need a sewing machine?

While an entire quilt can be sewn completely by hand, quilters who are after speed and accuracy may like to add a sewing machine to their quilting tools list. There’s no need to make a huge investment in a sewing machine when you first start quilting. Once you are sure this is something you plan to do on a larger scale, there are various levels of sewing machines. There are plenty of machines out there at an affordable price that has fewer bells and whistles and will do just fine for a casual quilter.

Pins and needles are essential quilting tools

It may seem obvious, but lots of quilters forget to buy pins and needles when they’re purchasing their essential quilting tools. Acting as the glue, long straight pins hold components together. We recommend very thin pins with large heads. Glow in the dark pins are also easy to spot when you drop them on the floor.

How to start quilting without making mistakes

No matter how many years you have been quilting, you’re bound to have moments where your quilting goes astray. But don’t worry! Even the most accomplished quilters make mistakes. We’ve put together a list of ways you can avoid the pain of an unpicking nightmare.

Common quilting mistakes and how to avoid them

Ever heard the saying, ‘we learn best from our own mistakes?’ While undoubtedly true, sometimes it’s nice to learn from others instead. So, we thought we’d share a few of our favourites. Whether you’re a beginner or well-versed in quilting, we hope you find something that helps you along your way.

The importance of pre-washing, starching, and pressing quilting fabric

Once you’ve purchased your quilting fabric from a fabric store, the first step to successful quilting is remembering to press, pre-wash, and starch your quilting fabric. This may appear time-consuming and feel like a waste of time, but believe me, it can be especially helpful when piecing patchwork blocks. A stiff piece of quilting fabric increases the accuracy of the piecing, ensuring the quilting fabric does not easily distort during the process.

Remember to square up blocks before assembling them into the quilt top

When it comes to sewing patchwork blocks, you will possibly end up with patchwork panels in different sizes. If you are following a quilting pattern that advises you to square up the blocks and make them a specific size, make sure you remember to do this. Otherwise, think twice before proceeding to chop off your blocks. But don’t worry about being too particular. If the difference between your quilting blocks is not too much. Then it is OK to have blocks of different sizes! You just don’t want the discrepancy to be noticeably different. If you are following a quilting pattern, and it fails to mention how to join blocks of different sizes, our top tip is to use lots of pins. Match the corners first, then any intersection points, before spacing the extra length evenly.

Adding a border to a quilt top

Sometimes, a quilting pattern may not give specific instructions on how to create the perfect border. While it might just be tempting to cut a long strip of quilting fabric and sew it to your quilt top, we urge you to err on the side of caution. It may seem like the quickest way to go about it, but it’s not always the most accurate way to add borders to your quilting. The best way to calculate the length of the borders is by measuring the top vertically, the left and right edges, and through the centre. Average the measurements and use that size to cut the vertical borders. Add them to the quilt top. Finally, measure the top horizontally, the top and bottom edges, and through the centre. Use the average size and cut the horizontal border. It’s as simple as that!

Polygon Play is a creative alternate way to make wonky hexies and see how fun they are
to make and create with.

Join Kelley and Fiona in a week long retreat here at Fifi's.

You will work on your Judy Niemeyer project in our lovely workroom with
one on one qualified teaching.
We have just completed the gorgeous Dinner Plate Dahlia (pictured)
from Quiltworx, Judy Niemeyer
and you could work on your very own in this week.
If there was another Judy Niemeyer project you have been dreaming about starting
that can be done also.
This workshop is a five day commitment and starts at 9.30am each day.
The cost is $500 and includes morning and afternoon tea each day.
Fabric and pattern will need to be purchased prior to class and Kelley and Fiona
are happy to help with your selections.

accurate 9 patch piecing, colour and valuable tips along the way.
The low volume version of this quilt is on display instore for you to come and visit.

Kaffe Fassett's Glorious Colour Lecture

On Tuesday 15th February, avid quilters and colour fanatics filled the Currumbin RSL function room to listen to Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably’s Glorious Colour Lecture.

The whole Fifi team was excited to be part of such a special night and arrived early to set up a Kaffe Fassett inspired stall and meet and greet the enthusiastic guests. After welcome drinks, and successful pre-show sales, Fiona took to the stage to officially open the evening and introduce the wonderful Brandon and Kaffe.

Brandon Mably is a colour enthusiast, knitwear designer, and has been the Studio Manager of Kaffe Fassett Studio in London for over a decade. Brandon’s passion for his work and tales of his colour journey are awe inspiring and provided the perfect introduction to Kaffe’s main presentation.

That said, Kaffe Fassett needs no introduction. A world renowned fabric designer and expert in all things colour! Kaffe has done it all, from walking into Vogue with his first knitted jumper that used a measly 20 different coloured yarns, to hosting his own television show, being the first textile designer to have a living exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum, and now presenting at the Currumbin RSL as part of his Australia tour.

For the next couple of hours, guests listened to Kaffe as he verbally painted his colour journey; funny stories about his name, his lack of concern for the neatness of the back of his work, his creative process, what inspires him, and how his use of colour and shapes has been moulded over the years by the people he’s met, the places he’s been and the social circumstances of the world around him. Everyone was completely captivated by Kaffe and revelled in the chance to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of this fascinating man and his work.

The lecture concluded with an in-depth Q&A discussion, before Kaffe and Brandon held a book signing. Almost every guest had either brought their favourite book with them, or were able to purchase one of the Kaffe Collective books from our stall. The room was alive with conversation, discussing what they’d just heard, how it related to their own work, and the excitement of getting to meet Kaffe and Brandon in person!

Once the signing was over and the audience had started to dwindle, we were lucky enough to grab Kaffe and Brandon for an exclusive interview where we asked YOUR questions and some of our own!

Brandon and Kaffe were a pleasure to interview, giving in-depth responses and bouncing off each other. Their respect for Fiona and Fifi’s Fabricology was humbling and we can’t wait to invite them back!
